Group Use Permits

Permits are required for groups of 26 or more picnickers or other day users. Permits may be issued for hours between 7:00am and midnight of the same day except for park areas that are normally closed before midnight.

Minors below the age of 18 who stay beyond 7:00pm must have adult supervision of 1 responsible adult for every 10 or fewer minors. The adult-minor ratio does not apply to immediate families when the children are accompanied by at least one of their parents.

Regardless of group size, permits are required for use of the pavilions at the following park areas:

  •    Old Kona Airport State Recreation Area, Hawai'i

  •    Wailoa River State Recreation Area, Hawai'i

  •    He'eia State Park, O'ahu

  •    Koke'e State Park, Kaua'i

  •    Polihale State Park, Kaua'i

Camping and Lodging Permits

Permits are required for camping or lodging. The maximum length of stay allowable under each permit at any one park is 5 consecutive nights. Another camping or lodging permit for the same park cannot be issued to any adult covered under a previous permit until 30 days have elapsed.

The exception to this rule is Na Pali Coast State Park, Kaua'i. The maximum length of stay is 3 consecutive nights at Miloli'i and 5 consecutive nights along the Kalalau Trail (no 2 consecutive nights may be spent at Hanakapi'ai Valley and at Hanakoa Valley).

Camping and lodging are available 7 nights a week with the following exceptions:

  • State Parks on O'ahu are open to camping Friday through Wednesday. Sand Island State Recreation Area, O'ahu is open for camping from Friday through Monday only
  • The cabin at Polipoli Spring State Recreation Area, Maui, is not available on Tuesday nights.

Minors below the age of 18 shall be allowed to camp provided that they are under the direct supervision of 1 responsible adult for every 10 or fewer minors. The adult-minor ratio does not apply to immediate families when the children are accompanied by at least one of their parents.

To confirm reservations, State operated camping areas require a full payment of the total cost of the camping no later than 2 weeks after a tentative reservation is issued. For cabin reservations, a 50% deposit of the total cost of the lodging is required. If the payment is not received within two weeks, the reservation will be cancelled. For cabins, the remaining payment is due upon or before issuance of the cabin key. For O`ahu parks and for reservations made 30 days or less prior to the first night of camping, payment in full (by any accepted means other than personal or business check) is due at the time of making the reservation. Payment, unless otherwise specified, shall be in cash, cashier's check, certified check, postal money order or bank money order. We do not accept credit card payments. Checks are to be made payable to Department of Land and Natural Resources. Personal or business checks will be accepted only if payment is received more than 30 days before the date of the event, therefore checks will not be accepted for O`ahu camping.

Refund of deposit will be made only if the district office that issued the permit receives notification of the cancellation 15 days or more before the first occupancy date shown on the permit. The original permit must be returned to that office prior to processing the refund. Partially paid cabin reservations shall be cancelled and any deposits forfeited if the permittee does not check-in on the first day of the reservation.

Additional information, such as check-in and check-out times, where to pick up the key, and where to pay the balance due, will be provided when the reservation is confirmed.
